AfCFTA: a continental market to win
Raising competitiveness to join African value chains.
Operational since January 2021, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is the world's largest free trade area by number of participating countries. For Senegalese companies it opens considerable outlets, provided they become more competitive and join regional value chains.
Intra-African trade still accounts for only about 15% of the continent's trade, compared with nearly 60% in Europe and 40% in Asia. According to UNCTAD, full implementation of the AfCFTA could increase intra-African trade by more than 50% and create several million jobs.
Key point: for Senegal, the AfCFTA is a natural outlet for processed goods from the industrialisation strategy. CNES will help its members understand rules of origin and access regional markets.
